Chiang Ching-kuo was deeply concerned about the lives of ordinary people. Whenever he encountered young children during his travels around Taiwan, he could not help but hug them, pinch their cheeks, and kindly ask, “Little one, how old are you?” He would personally reach into his pocket to buy candy for the children. When Chiang Ching-kuo visited a children's home in 1976, he picked up three-year-old Grace Yang, who shyly said, “Grandpa Chiang, I have no hands!” Chiang Ching-kuo replied firmly, “It's okay if you have no hands; you still have feet! You can do many things with your feet!” This inspired her to learn to do things that most people do with their hands with her feet instead.
The selected photos of Chiang Ching-kuo with children were mostly taken during his presidency, when he often visited rural areas despite his busy schedule. In these photos, Chiang Ching-kuo is seen happily laughing and showing his true emotions. The children in these photos, taken over forty years ago, have now grown up. If you have ever taken a photo with Chiang Ching-kuo, you might want to see if you can find yourself in these pictures.
