Collection of Signed Books Introduction to the Special Collections In addition to traditional Chinese texts such as the Four Books and Five Classics, Chiang Ching-kuo’s collection also included books given to him by his children, family members, and friends, as well as by overseas dignitaries. When Chiang Ching-kuo visited foreign countries or when foreign friends came to Taiwan, they would give each other books. The 54 signed books on display include gifts from U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and U.S. Army commander General A. C. Wedemeyer, former CIA station chief in Taipei Ray S. Cline, and Vice Admiral Charles L. Melson of the U.S. Navy. The collection also includes gifts from his family members such as his father Chiang Kai-shek and his father’s wife Soong Mei-ling as well as Chiang Ching-kuo’s own children. One of the books is Clear Spring in the Valley, which was a gift to her father from Chiang Ching-kuo’s eldest daughter Hsiao-chang. The title page of the book contains a message from Hsiao-chang to her father, and there are also notes from Chiang Ching-kuo’s reading inside the book.
